When a bitch is leaking, the smell of her excites the males very much and both male and female become very cunning at this time.

Needless to say, it is important for the bitch to be securely isolated from the males during the entire heat period. There is no point in locking the bitch in her room, as someone is bound to forget and come in and leave the door open.

Keeping male and female dogs separated during heat only by a fence is cruel and bad for both male and female dogs, especially since there have been cases where male and female dogs have successfully knit despite the fence.

When a bitch leaks, you need to think about where to walk her. Otherwise, all the neighbor's male dogs will gather outside your wicket or door, waiting for her to come out. Bitches, if they are small enough, need to be carried to the walking area in your arms so the bitch doesn't "mess up" on the way out.

There are special products that make the smell coming from the bitch less attractive to the dogs. These products can be used if the bitch will not be mated in the next few days. There are cases where experienced males, after comparing the behaviour of the bitch with this smell, begin to recognise it too, and then, unfortunately, it will have the opposite effect and more males will gather at the door than before!

It is very important that during heat the bitches are kept warm and not exposed to draughts. They should not be allowed to lie on wet grass or sit on cold, wet floors. They should not be walked for long periods if there is a cold wind outside, especially if there is wet snow. Bitches during heat are very prone to colds, which in turn can turn into uterine inflammation.
